It's The Money Stupid

Never be in any doubt that the prime motivating force behind the Olympics is money, not sport.

This point is best illustrated by the news about the top sponsor of the forthcoming Winter Olympics in Torino Italy, MacDonalds.

MacDonalds will shortly roll out new global Olympic-Themed Television commercials.

These new global creative will feature its mascot Ronald McDonald vignettes and a spot celebrating Olympic dreams, McDonald's Olympic Champion.

Two official Olympic venue McDonald's restaurants, in the Torino Olympic Village and Main Press Centre, will also feature McCafe for the first time ever.

I trust that the irony is not lost on people?

  1. Never be in any doubt that the prime motivating force behind the Olympics is money, not sport.

    What does that mean, exactly?

I've been reading this blog occasionally for about a year and have never commented before. Your posts are all just brief restatements of the news. Every once in a while you throw out a one-liner like this one that makes it obvious that you are not a fan of the Olympics. Fair enough, but you never explain your position.

Does the statement above mean that:

    - everybody involved with the Olympics is only involved in the hopes that they will get money?

    - countries only agree to host the Olympics because they want to make money?

    - the IOC cares more about money than it does about sport?

Or does it mean something else?
