Spectrum Is Green

SIGWith an estimated worldwide audience of 5BN, London Olympics organisers are keen to make sure the audience can actually see the games.

To this end Ofcom has announced that it will "borrow" spectrum from public bodies in order to deal with the demand for airwaves during the 2012 Olympic Games.

Ofcom intends to borrowing airwaves currently used by the Ministry of Defence and the Civil Aviation Authority to meet the short-term demand.

Ofcom emphasised that it would not endanger essential services by using publicly owned spectrum for the Olympics, and that the organisations had already agreed to make the resource available.

  1. Sheer stupidity! If there's a terrorist attack which takes out part of the existing comms networks (and lets face it, in the current climate this will be a strong possibility), will the emergency services be able to reclaim enough capacity to do what they need to do?

As I understand it, in the event of major incident, the emergency services (which could include the Forces) are entitled to commandeer large parts of the comms infrastructure which will presumably not be available in this case?
