Style Over Substance
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has managed to dig itself into a hole, over its dress code for women badminton players in the London 2012 Olympics.
It has ruled that women players must wear dresses or skirts, irrespective of whether they wear shorts/trousers underneath.
For why?
The Telegraph quotes Paisan Rangsikitpho, the BWF deputy president, who said that there was no sexism involved in the decision but that the federation wanted to differentiate the women's game.
"We need to be able to able to differentiate the women's game and the ruling is part of a larger campaign to enhance the presentation profile of the sport.
This is to help attract a wider target group amongst both younger and older people, and amongst both women and men, where an aesthetic and stylish presentation of the players is certainly an important factor."
Surely people can tell the difference between male and female badminton players, irrespective of whether they are in shorts, skirts, dresses or trousers?

£40M Not Saved?
Further to my earlier article about £40M being saved from the London Olympics "budget", by transferring badminton from a purpose built arena to Wembley, it seems that not everyone agrees with this idea.
Badminton's governing body, the Badminton World Federation, is opposed to the move (and by definition the saving). It says that it does not want the sport to be in a "stand alone" west London venue.
Back to square one!

£40M Saved
In a rare display of financial acumen, the London Olympics organisers have come up with a way to save £40M
They will use Wembley Arena as the venue for badminton and rhythmic gymnastics at the London 2012 Olympics.
This means that a temporary £40M venue will not need to be built.
Who the hell thought up spending £40M on a temporary venue anyway?
I wonder how much more could be saved if people actually applied some financial commonsense?

Cost Savings
Financial reality seems finally to be dawning on those organising the budget busting London Olympics 2012 (aka the "flat pack" Olympics).
Badminton and rhythmic gymnastics will be moved to Wembley Arena, saving £42M in budgeted costs for a temporary venue which would have been built for these events in Greenwich.
£42M saved, less than £12BN to go!

The Building With No Name
There seems to be something of a problem brewing with the O2 Arena (no longer called the Millennium Dome because of it's association with white elephants).
AEG, the owner of the O2 arena, has had to remove the O2 branding from the building for the duration of the London 2012 Olympics as a result of a sponsorship clash with 2012 telecoms sponsor BT.
The building will be unbranded during the games, as AEG will not allow another brand to sponsor the venue.
Olympics organiser LOCOG is now in a flap, because the O2 Arena is to be used to host badminton and basketball events. Clearly it will look quite ridiculous to host the events at a building that has no name!
Needless to say this issue has been known about for several years. It is rather puzzling that it has only just come to a head.
As ever, the Olympics are not about sport but are about money and corporate image.
Feel free to make suggestions as to what to call the O2 Arena (Millennium Dome).
