LOCOG A Study In Perversity
The Telegraph reports that over 1,500 formal objections have been lodged with Greenwich Borough Council against LOCOG's planning application to use Greenwich Park for 2012 equestrian events.
Amongst the objections is one from ICOMOS-UK whose parent body, the International Council of Monuments and Sites, is advisor to UNESCO who designated Greenwich a World Heritage Site in 1997.
ICOMOS-UK believe that the equestrian Olympics will deter tourists, and that significant damage could be caused by equine and spectator infrastructure.
LOCOG insist that Greenwich is the only option as there is no "fall back" venue. Yet, perversely, LOCOG's own environmental statement shows that Windsor scores higher than Greenwich Park on facilities and the ability to host the contest.
Do LOCOG actually know what it is doing?

Sea Change?
The organisers of the London Olympics, LOCOG, have achieved something of a coup in creating an apparent sea change in attitude amongst the residents of Greenwich wrt plans for using Greenwich Park to stage the equestrian events for the London 2012 Olympics.
In October a survey, organised by the London Assembly, put opposition to the event at 68%. However, LOCOG's own survey released yesterday shows that 85% of residents now support the scheme; if the park is only closed for 6 weeks.
Great!
Except for one small problem.
LOCOG's planning application states that closure of parts of the park will begin in "spring 2010," but the grassland will not be fully restored and reopened until "November 2015."
Lorries will be driven onto the park 6,420 times - an average of 43 to 58 per day - during the set-up and removal of the main showjumping arena. This phase will close large parts of the park for a total of eight months in 2012.
In other words, LOCOG's survey is misleading, as it didn't provide the respondents with accurate information.

Cost Savings
Financial reality seems finally to be dawning on those organising the budget busting London Olympics 2012 (aka the "flat pack" Olympics).
Badminton and rhythmic gymnastics will be moved to Wembley Arena, saving £42M in budgeted costs for a temporary venue which would have been built for these events in Greenwich.
£42M saved, less than £12BN to go!

Boris Battles IOC
I see that Boris Johnson is going into battle against the IOC et al, over plans to build a £40M temporary venue near the 02 in Greenwich.
According to Adrian Warner of the BBC:
"Expect plenty of rows on this for months yet. And also expect Johnson to dig in hard to get his way.
2012 has become very political. This row is so acrimonious that Johnson rushed in front of TV cameras this week without even telling 2012 he planned to do so.
Boris has stepped out of the Olympic tent. The 2012 consensus has been shattered. With the IOC also ready to play a hard game, we are in for some interesting days."
My money's on Boris winning this one!

Regeneration?
Figures provided by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) show that of the 4,101 workers employed in constructing the Olympic Park, approximately 20% are from the five local boroughs.
Within the 20%, only 115 were formerly unemployed in Greenwich, Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets or Waltham Forest.
The cost of the Olympic Park is currently estimated to be £1.1BN.
Not much of a legacy for the local community!

Horsing Around
The hapless and hopeless Olympics Minister, Tessa Jowell, and LOCOG have something of a fight on their hands wrt their plans to use Greenwich Park for the 2012 equestrian events.
A campaign, No to Greenwich Olympic Equestrian Events (NOGOE), has been set up to fight the plans. Thhe campaign group has a number of high profile supporters such as Dr David Starkey, Sir David Nicholas, former head of ITN, Sir Frank Berman QC, a former legal adviser to the Foreign Office, and Sir Geoffrey Chipperfield, a former chief executive of the Property Services Agency.

Olympic Report Whitewash
Those in charge of London 2012 are under pressure to release a confidential report by KPMG on Olympics venues, after allegations that it was a "whitewash".
The report considered moving three temporary venues (the equestrian in Greenwich, the shooting in Woolwich and basketball in the Olympic Park) to save costs, but is thought to have recommended they should not be relocated.
Temporary venues provide no legacy, yet the organisers have always promised a legacy for London.
The promises made about the London Olympics simply don't add up.

Size Matters
Plans to use Greenwich Park for the Olympics 2012 three day eventing have hit a snag.
The park is too small, and filled to the gills with archaeological treasures (Roman remains) including trees dating from the reign of Charles II.
Dane Rawlins, the rider and Olympic trainer is quoted in the Telegraph saying:
"We shouldn't have to desecrate a jewel of London to put on a two-week horse event.
The cross-country will ruin the park. They will have to cut the paths out and the track will have to go through the flower garden. The tree canopy is too low and trees will have to be cut or removed."
Locog disagree with the campaign against using the park:
"We think that Greenwich Park will be one of the most amazing venues for the 2012 games and we believe that concerns about it being too small can be overcome.
Lots of people think the cross-country course will be fantastic. It hasn't even been designed yet, but we will take into account people's views."
They would say that, wouldn't they?

Torch Trouble
It looks as though there will be trouble as the Olympic torch is carried around the world, in the run up to the Beijing Olympics this August.
Anti China protesters evaded tight security and managed to disrupt yesterday's Olympic torch ceremony, this guarantees that the flame's procession through London in a fortnight's time will be disrupted.
Tenzin Dorjee, a Tibetan activist who was briefly detained during the protest, said:
"Later we will do protests in London and Paris."
Scotland Yard will allocate 2,000 officers and staff, including river, airborne and mounted police, to protect the Olympic flame's journey from Wembley Stadium to Greenwich on April 6.
Human rights activists, supporters of an independent Tibet and critics of China's support for Darfur and Burma are preparing demonstrations along the 31 mile route.
Are the Olympics really worth all this trouble?
