The Telegraph reports that British Shooting has been advised by the government that if it wants a post 2012 legacy at Woolwich, it will have to pay £400K for the privilege.
I wonder if that figure will be added to the Olympics budget, even if British Shooting pay it, given that the concept of "legacy" is what we are being told the money is being spent on?

Months of Olympic Chaos
It seems that mere mortals in Woolwich, not lucky enough to be granted special travel lanes/travel arrangements for the Olympics, will be suffering some considerable travel inconvenience during (and indeed in the 9 months preceding) the London Olympics.
The Olympics Delivery Authority (ODA) will be closing roads around the 2012 shooting venue, up to nine months before the event. Ha Ha Road, Repository Road and Circular Way will be closed before and during the Games.
The ODA planning application also shows that sports fields will be closed, and an unspecified number of trees felled.
I am sure that the residents of Woolwich will bear their inconvenience with fortitude!
After all the Olympics is such a "worthy, well supported and popular cause", isn't it?

Woolwich Barracks Obscured
The London Olympics bid showed an artist's impression of a female competitor aiming her shotgun in full view of the grade II-listed frontage of the Royal Artillery barracks Woolwich.
The reality will be somewhat less impressive.
Owing to health and safety issues the backdrop for the Olympic clay pigeon shooting competition will be a 62ft (19m) high "ballistic screen", this will stretch across the shotgun range to prevent lead from pellets hitting nearby homes.

Appalling Waste
Lord Lucas, during question time on Tuesday, said:
"Is it not a strange definition of cost-effective and a most appalling waste to spend £40m on a shooting venue at Woolwich, which will be destroyed immediately after the Olympics, rather than £10m less for a facility at Bisley that will be used for generations?"
I agree.
However, what is £40M in an ever expanding budget that currently stands at £12BN (including £2BN running costs)?

Shooting Themeselves in The Foot
Locog, the organisers of the London 2012 Olympics, have a propensity to waste taxpayers' money on their plans for self aggrandisement.
A particularly good example of their waste is the £26M that they intend to spend on the Olympics shooting range at Woolwich.
British Shooting want the range to be sited at Dartford. This is a 178-acre site which, post-2012, would leave shooting with an up to date facility; ie it would leave a legacy.
Locog are trying to concentrate the Games in one very small area of London, and have opted for Woolwich at a cost of £26M.
The chairman of British Shooting, Phil Boakes, said:
"An enormous amount of money is going to be squandered by Locog. The £26 million it is going to cost is made up of £18.6 million to build the facilities and £4million to demolish after the Games (plus VAT) and there will be virtually no legacy for the sport."
In other words, Locog are spending £26M for a three week event.
Money down the toilet.
Why should Locog care, it's only taxpayers' money!

The Shooting Party
As noted in an earlier article last year, there is a row between London 2012 organisers and the governing body of British Shooting over the proposed shooting venue for the London Olympics 2012.
Philip Boakes, chairman of British Shooting, wants the venue in Woolwich changed and has written to every MP on the subject.
Mr Boakes quite rightly believes that it is a waste of £25M to build the ranges, only to demolish them at the end of the Games. He wants the venue moved to Dartford, and the money invested into a shooting range that will remain after the Games.
London 2012, for their part, are insisting that the venue must be as near as possible to the Olympic Park.
Mr Boakes is quoted in The Times:
"Our alternative at Dartford also allows the athletes to remain in the Olympic Village - under 45 minutes drive away - so that argument does not stand. Other sports have already had their venues moved so why not shooting?
We will have nothing left for shooting after the end of the Olympics and that is the reason we are so unhappy."
