Three Cheers For The Blue White and Blue
The official outfits of Team GB for the London Olympics have been revealed today on Facebook.
For reasons best known to the designer (Stella McCartney) she has used the Union Jack but removed the red from it and replaced it with blue.
She claims that she wants the athletes to be "proud of their identity".
That being the case, why bastardise the Union flag?
Result: Loser!

Sponsorship Stupidity - The True Olympic's Spirit
The paranoia of Olympics sponsors (when it comes to protecting their "investment" in the London Olympics) knows no bounds.
Last month I wrote:
"There seems to be something of a hissy fit going on between the BOA and the agents of one of the sponsors of the London 2012 Olympics.
The agents of some competitors, who are sponsored by Nike, have told the BOA that athletes would be in breach of contracts if they are forced to wear Team GB’s official ”presentation outfit” which is sponsored by Adidas.
The BOA have hit back, and said that the rules mean that the athletes must wear the sponsor's (Adidas) footwear at all times."
The issue over footwear won't die down, the Telegraph reports that Aidan Kirkwood (a soldier injured in Afghanistan) was required to cover up the Raebok logo on his trainers with white tape when he appeared at an Olympic torch relay event this week.
There's the true "Olympic spirit" for you, money before sport or community spirit!

Barefoot Athletes
There seems to be something of a hissy fit going on between the BOA and the agents of one of the sponsors of the London 2012 Olympics.
The agents of some competitors, who are sponsored by Nike, have told the BOA that athletes would be in breach of contracts if they are forced to wear Team GB’s official ”presentation outfit” which is sponsored by Adidas.
The agents have told the BOA that athletes might have to take off their shoes before mounting the presentation dais.
The BOA have hit back, and said that the rules mean that the athletes must wear the sponsor's (Adidas) footwear at all times.
What a complete load of old bollocks and fuss over a matter of footwear.
There seems to be too much money and too many corporate egos involved with these games.
As noted many times before, the Olympics are about money not sport!

Team GB Deficit
Aside form the £12BN or so costs of holding the 2012 London Olympics, there is the small matter of actually funding the British athletes.
Team GB currently faces a £50M shortfall in its budget. As a result of the shortfall some events may take place without British competitors.
The British Olympic Association has joined with other 2012 stakeholders to raise extra cash through a new "Team 2012" sponsorship programme, and tap the public for more funds (outwith the tax that they are already paying).
In theory, if the public pay up, they might be able to raise around £10M - £20M.

B&Q Ends Olympic Sponsorship
In the face of the worsening recession, B&Q have announced that they are ending their sponsorship of Olympic athletes.
B&Q have also ended their sponsorship of the British Olympic Association.
Jacqueline Caston, the external relations manager at B&Q, is quoted in the Telegraph:
"We enjoyed great internal, motivational success through our partnership with Team GB, but decided not to continue the partnership past the contractual end date of Dec 31, 2008."

Moaning Moynihan
The Times reports that Lord Moynihan is moaning that that the target of fourth place in the 2012 London Olympics medal table for Team GB will slip to 8th, if budget cuts of up to £79M are pushed through.

To give our Olympic and Paralympic athletes the best chance of success in 2012, the full investment programme agreed by Gordon Brown when he was Chancellor must be honoured in full."
So what?

Coe Calls in Lawyers
The organisers of the 2012 London Olympics have denied a newspaper story that Sebastian Coe said "F*** 'em" after being asked about objections from Wales and Scotland to the idea of a GB Olympic football team.
The committee said it had consulted its lawyers.
Lord Coe was reported by the London Paper to have made the remark during a reception hosted by the British Olympic Association (BOA) at the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham.
A spokeswoman for the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games told Wales Online:
"Our lawyers have communicated our very serious concerns to the London Paper. They have taken the story off their website. We are discussing with them the wording of a retraction we want them to publish, but that has not been concluded. We do not recognise the language [attributed to Lord Coe].
We certainly deny the gist of the story, that he [Lord Coe] is not interested in the views of Wales and Scotland."

London Wields Big Guns
London, in its bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games, is bringing in Britain's sporting stars to add a touch of "glamour" to the proceedings.
David Beckham, and other captains of Britain's national sports teams, have been roped in to support the bid.
England soccer captain Beckham, rugby captain Jason Robinson and cricket skipper Michael Vaughan released a joint statement yesterday in support of the bid.
"We aspire to win world cups in our sports and know the Olympics is not an event in which we can take part but we want to win this race just as much as any athlete, swimmer or cyclist...".
Among others signing the petition were England rugby league captain Andy Farrell, Scotland soccer captain Barry Ferguson, Scotland rugby captain Gordon Bulloch and Wales soccer captain Gary Speed.
