Olympic Insurrection

Kudos to this shop in Surbiton for sticking two fingers up to the Olympic brand police and joining the Olympic Insurrection.

Three Cheers For The Blue White and Blue

The official outfits of Team GB for the London Olympics have been revealed today on Facebook.

For reasons best known to the designer (Stella McCartney) she has used the Union Jack but removed the red from it and replaced it with blue.

She claims that she wants the athletes to be "proud of their identity".

That being the case, why bastardise the Union flag?

Result: Loser!

Iran Olympics Boycott?

There are some rumours floating around Twitter that Iran is considering boycotting the London 2012 Olympics, as retribution for the recently announced sanctions and worsening relations.

It is not clear as to whether this particular rumour is true or not. However, the talk about Iran possibly boycotting the games is not new.

In February this year the Iranians were making nosies about boycotting the games because of their dislike of the Olympics logo:

"The National Olympic Committee of Iran has sent a letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) complaining about the logo of 2012 London Olympic Games.

For why?

Apparently, the logo says "Zion"???!!
"

In other words, the threat of an Iranian boycott is nothing more than "business as usual".

Streakers Face £20K Fines

In case people haven't yet realised it yet, the Olympics are purely about money and corporate sponsorship deals (sport is but a mere backdrop to the money deals).

The proof of how money focused the Olympics are, can be seen in the stringent rules that will be enforced during next year's London 2012 games.

An amendment to the London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Act 2006 aims to target unofficial, or ambush, marketing and could cover anyone who tries to use their bodies to flash an advert for a company.

This means that if a streaker were to run across the track with a logo painted on his/her body, he/she could be fined £20K.

That sounds almost like a challenge to some brave souls!

Twats

My sympathies to Avril Unwin owner of Authentic Cakes in Wulfstan Way Cambridge, who has fallen foul of the money making machine that is the Olympics.

Mrs Unwin had been planning, along with other members of the British Sugarcraft Guild, an exhibition of sugar skills on the theme of the Olympics next year.

However, the International Olympic Committee have banned the use of any Olympic logos or symbols at next year's exhibition.

Mrs Unwin will instead decided to use the flags of different countries attending the Olympics for her decorations.

As noted before on this site, the Olympics are about money not sport.

London Logo Farce - The Farce Continues VII

Unsurprisingly the International Olympic Committee has rejected Iran's complaint that the logo for the 2012 Olympics resembles the word Zion, and is racist.

"The London 2012 logo represents the figure 2012, nothing else."

However, I guarantee that this absurd and pathetic fuss over the logo will not die down.

London Logo Farce - The Farce Continues VI

London Olympics LogoAs we know, the London 2012 Olympics Logo (aka Lisa Simpson Gives Head) has attracted a fair amount of criticism since it was unveiled in 2007.

However, even by the standards of the Olympics, the latest fuss over the logo is absurd in the extreme.

The National Olympic Committee of Iran has sent a letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) complaining about the logo of 2012 London Olympic Games.

For why?

Apparently, the logo says "Zion"???!!

The letter is signed by the Head of Iranian Olympics Committee, Mohammad Ali Abadi and the Secretary General of Iran's Olympic Committee Bahram Afsharzade addressed to the president of IOC Jacques Rogge.

"We appreciate the committee's efforts in line with developing the spirit of Olympism all over the world. We ask for your consideration of the following issue which if neglected, may have destructive effects on the future of sport, especially London Olympic Games in 2012.

Highlighting the values of Olympic, which ban any sorts of partiality, political, religious and racial measures in this field, may have a leading role to hold London Games better.

We have two years ahead to the opening of the games and unfortunately we see the games face with a critical challenge at the beginning which is raised by the racial attitudes of some individuals.

As internet documents have proved, using the word Zion in the logo of 2012 Olympic Games is a disgracing action and against Olympic's valuable mottos.

There is no doubt that negligence of the issue from your side may affect the presence of some countries in the games, especially Iran which abides by commitment to the values and principles.
"

The logo is undoubtedly dreadful in terms of aesthetics, and conveying the concept of the games. However, to claim that it actually says "Zion" and is intended to be a racial insult is nonsense.

That being said, this absurd objection will undoubtedly stir a large number of people up and there will be a lengthy and unnecessary fuss over this.

Appalling Design

Sir Terence Conran, a man with "some expertise" when it comes to design, has weighed into the furore over the London Olympics mascots (one of who resembles Sonic The Hedgehog wielding a knife).

His verdict?

In a letter to The Times he said:

"Appalling...symbols of national mediocrity".

Her then went on to compare them to that other "design triumph", the Millennium Dome exhibition.

Drips Off The Old Block

Mascots
The London Olympics mascots, Wenlock and Mandeville (named after two English towns), were unveiled yesterday.

True to form, in keeping with these games, they represent nothing on earth.

The only element that could be claimed to be symbolic of Britain is the single "camera lens" eye that each creature has, representing the excessive level of surveillance that the people of Britain are subjected to by the government and other bodies.

Mascot To Be Unveiled

Hold onto your hats, at 7PM (BST) tonight, the London 2012 Olympics mascot will be unveiled.

The "buzz" from the London Olympics bunker is that the mascot will be "adventurous", and won't be an animal.

Lord Coe has semi spilt the beans, he has been telling the USA media that the mascots are a child friendly creation formed from a drop of steel from the Olympic Stadium.

Seemingly the mascots are based on a story by children's author Michael Morpurgo, and are aimed aimed particularly at children.

Why would that be?

Well, the games are all about money and the mascots will be sold. Child "I want one" power is an effective marketing tool.

I wonder if it will receive the same "warm" welcome that the "Lisa Simpson Gives Head" logo received?

I'll hazard a guess that it's a couple of marbles.

An Object Lesson

The shambles of the Vancouver Winter Olympics is providing a valuable object lesson for the organisers of the London 2012 Olympics.

The trouble is that the London Olympics are already massively over budget (£12BN against an initial budget of around £3BN), and have a much derided logo (Lisa Simpson giving head).

One wonders what other disasters can befall the London Olympics?

Lots actually, most especially those relating to our third world transportation system.

Even Tess Jowell, Olympics Minister, seems to have realised this. She told the Evening Standard:

"There are certainly lessons we can learn. We need to trial getting people to and from the venues so we are absolutely clear about the stress on the transport system and we can anticipate any problems."

Good luck with that then!

London Logo Farce - The Farce Continues V

The controversy over the "Lisa Simpson Gives Head" London 2012 Olympic logo continues unabated.

This time Brett Gosper, president of McCann Worldgroup in Europe (the agency that is promoting the games), weighed into the controversy noting that he would "probably not" have chosen it to represent the London 2012 games.

London 2012 officials responded by saying:

"This is surprising."

Where have they been for the past two years?

BTW I understand that the IOC hates the "Lisa Simpson Gives Head" analogy, as they quite rightly see that it damages their brand, and have tried to remove any videos from the web that purport to show such an action.

I wonder why they didn't see the similarity before choosing this logo?

It's The Money Stupid

Congratulations to British Airways for spending £40M, in order to secure the rights to use the much derided "Lisa Simpson Gives Head" London Olympics logo.

Lisa Simpson Gives Head

Money well spent!

Other organisations, which have tried to enter into the spirit of things, but have not paid the requisite fee, have had a few problems.

Dennis Spurr owns the high street butchers "The Fantastic Sausage Factory" in Weymouth where the Olympic sailing events will be held.

He put up a poster over his shop, showing the Olympic rings shaped as sausages below the word "fantastic".

Needless to say the "enforcers" of the London Olympics were not best pleased, as they had not received their pound of flesh. They rang Mr Spurr and ordered him to take it down.

He duly complied, as he didn't want to be sued by the heavies that run the London Games.

However, hats off to one enterprise that has stuck two fingers up at the moneymaking machine that is the Olympics.

"Bar 2012", a bar in Weymouth, registered its name two years before London won the bid; and the London Olympics organisers can't touch them for that.

Good for them!

As I have stated on previous occasions, the Olympics is not about sport; it's about money.

Designers Sought

The organisers of the London 2012 Olympics are looking to improve their design capabilities, and are seeking a panel of design and creative services consultancies.

The Olympic Delivery Authority and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games have jointly asked for tenders to form a panel of suppliers specialising in a range of marketing, design and communications services.

Pity they didn't do this when they selected the firm that gave us the "Lisa Simpson Gives Head" logo.

Livingstone Pans Budget

Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, has panned the Olympics 2012 budget.

Speaking on BBC Sport Mayor Livingstone said that it would be a "defeat" if the Olympics in 2012 ended up costing more than £7BN.

The current budget now stands at £12BN including operating copsts, therefore he may have his hands full trying to reign that in.

The Mayor stated that the budget was in fact £5.5BN, thus muddying the waters.

Quote:

"I'll consider it a personal defeat if we do not knock several billion off.

We've now got a budget set for £5.5bn. Inevitably, things will crop up and it will almost end up at £6bn. I'd be quite proud if we kept it at that.

If it starts going over £7bn that will be a defeat.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has built in this huge contingency for just about everything that could go wrong.

Our job is to keep that to the minimum of things that could go wrong
."

Mayor Livingstone then went on to say that "exploded" when he saw the 2012 Olympics logo.

"I'm the mayor of a city and the only thing any mayor wants in the logo is the name of the city enormous and predominant.

I didn't get that so I was a bit grumpy about that.

It was hidden from me up until about the last two weeks and it was too late to do anything about it.

I exploded pretty much as dramatically as the rest of the country when they saw it.

But it's the only thing that I haven't got my way on in the last two years so I can't complain
."

Well said, the logo is crap as indeed is the budget.

London Logo Farce - The Farce Continues IV

The farce over the "Lisa Simpson Gives Head" London 2012 Olympics logo continues.

The organisers of the London Olympics have now revamped the logo to contain images of competing athletes.

One image, featuring a child taking part in martial arts, has been spotted on the side of an Olympics bus touring Britain to promote the Games.

Needless to say those behind the logo deny that this change is in any way connected to the howls of protests over the logo. The official line is that this is an attempt to "populate" an evolving brand.

Lord Coe, the chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (Locog), was reportedly shocked at the extent of the backlash that followed the launch of the logo last month.

The the logo will be shown in 3-D in films and on the internet. Seemingly it looks, so the designers say, very good when presented in that format.

However, the organisers who should have been more thorough wrt the planning have failed to take into account the fact that most people will see it only as a flat image in newspapers and magazines.

This hardly gives one confidence in their ability to organise and manage the Games themselves, does it?

The Cultured Olympics

The London 2012 Olympics will be hyped by a nationwide festival of culture, which will start next summer, according to Olympics organisers yesterday.

The festival will include an international Shakespeare festival, and mark the beginning of a four-year film and video project across Britain.

The festival is the first of 10 major projects to mark the Olympics. The projects are being planned in partnership with organisations such as the BBC, and the UK Film Council. The arts sector is being told how it can get involved in the celebrations.

It is somewhat ironic that arts are being used to promote the Olympics, and being told what to do, given that Lottery money intended for the arts is being diverted to fund the Olympic budget shortfall.

A tad hypocritical, wouldn't you say?

In a related announcement, there are plans for a logo to endorse sporting, community and cultural projects.

Guess who will be designing that?

Yes, that's right, the same company behind the "Lisa Simpson Gives Head" London Olympics logo!

Preparations for London 2012 Olympics Praised

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) fact finding mission to London has praised London 2012 organisers for their preparations, including the much derided logo.

Denis Oswald, the head of the IOC's coordination commission, said that he was pleased with all levels of planning.

Quote:

"Two years after London got the games, we are impressed by the level of detail in the preparation.

London is on track and on time
."

London is most certainly not on budget, which has ballooned to £12BN!

Oswald's 15 member inspection team reviewed London's preparations, including venue construction, sport, staffing, media and technology. It was the group's first visit since April 2006.

Oswald said London's legacy plans were as promised, when it won the bid in July 2005.

Quote:

"This legacy is very important.

We really consider that London will be a model for a future host city of the Olympic Games as far as legacy is concerned
."

Referring to the derided Olympics logo, Oswald said:

"I love it.

It's very dramatic, very creative, very young, very dynamic and includes a lot of flexibility. I was really enthusiastic and it is not because I've read that some people have criticised this logo that I will change my mind. It's just a fantastic logo
."

Great!

So what about the ballooning budget then?????

Inquiry Into London Logo Fiasco

Finally the London Olympic organisers have admitted that all may not be right with the "Lisa Simpson Gives Head" London 2102 Olympics logo design.

Lord Coe, chairman of the London organising committee, has announced that there will be an inquiry into last week's disastrous launch of promotional footage for the new Games logo which was blamed for causing 30 people to suffer epileptic seizures.

Lord Coe said that he was considering legal action against the production company, Live!, that was responsible for the footage.

Quote:

"We have set up an internal inquiry into exactly what happened with our supplier and the promotional footage that was shown.

We are getting to the bottom of what checks were made
."

A spokeswoman for the charity Epilepsy Action said:

"We now know of 30 people who have suffered fits as a result of this film.

This has affected people's lives and we were really hoping that Lord Coe might apologise for what happened
."

Once the internal investigation has been completed, Lord Coe and the committee will decide if there is a case against Live.

What a shambles!

It is noteworthy that there is, as yet, no investigation into the actual quality of the design or the tendering process (whereby no one sought to examine samples of possible designs for the logo).

Doubtless these investigations will be announced in due course?

An Inpsector Calls

Sixteen members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) are in London today, to review progress of preparations for the 2012 London Olympic games.

It fair to say that they are hoping that the furore over the logo will have died down a bit, clearly they don't know/understand the tabloid press in this country very well!

The Olympic commissioners will be the first passengers on a test train trying out the seven-minute shuttle between Stratford International Station, in East London, and the new St Pancras International Station.

They will be travelling by a Eurostar train, because the new high speed javelin trains are not yet in operation.

During the Games this service is in theory going to transport 25,000 passengers an hour.

Given the state of the rail network in this country, that is quite a gamble.
